How to approach the tone.

Now the tone of a film requires a huge consideration for varying factors of the film making process, such as shot composition, sound, mise-en-scene, editing, etc. Today I would like to discuss establishing tone through composition. The tone that I am aiming for in the film would be a witty dark comedy. There are two difficulties with this. To establish wit, much less good wit, set-up is needed in order to have said wit work. I look towards an article on the writers digest website. But wait, isn't this article covering film, a visual medium. Well writing is the parent to film as narrative trends brought forth by novels have always been present in great films that achieve their purpose. The article discusses how people immediately notice certain aspects of written novels that are either weak narratively or just out of place. One aspect that always seems to be misunderstood is wit. Wit is described as being something that simply astounds readers in a humorous way, something that they could never believe to happen. The proper use of wit would resonate immediately with audiences, while improper use of it would result in confusion and dissolution of interest. Adapting wit to a visual level is something that I will try to adapt to the film opening by simply presenting a very ridiculous yet cruel situation while, swooping in with dark comedy, providing an even crueler set of situations that the characters take in quirky strides, with little exposition. Show don't tell.

Hello! It is of my interest to give you some feedback on this journey you've embarked yourself into. In regards to the set up of the blog, I would like you to know that to read the postings was somewhat difficult considering the still movement in the background. The background picture you've chosen is really cool and I do agree that it goes with the tonality it seems so far that you're trying to achieve; dark, witty comedy… the colors and the movement of these blend well with the tone as I’ve said, and it is indeed a smart choice considering only the tonality. But when it comes to make it easy on the readers, I would suggest to use a different background.

Anyhow, in terms of the content I think it’s awesome you’ve started with the communication in regards to the “delicate” choice that working on creating a witty comedy is. The fact that you understand it is of crucial importance to have it well done will help you succeed in going beyond the screen and getting the story told to your viewers. Keep up the good thinking process!

  2. I really like the idea for your film! Dark humors of done correctly can be great. I'm glad you understand commiedies are hard to do, I would just be careful with the dark humor that you use because it can sometimes hit people the wrong way and may not come off as humor. I agree with the previous comment that the background makes the blog harder to read and you might want to consider changing it. Also it might be beneficial to you that you post more often.

Over all you have good research , a great idea and nicely composed blog! I'm excited to see your finished product!
